Testing/Assignments
In the 5th grade students will be required to take several assessments such as Weekly Wonders Reading Tests, Spelling Tests, Benchmark Assessments, Grammar Assessments, and Social Studies Tests. The first week of school students will take a beginning of the year assessment to assess the students strengths and weaknesses. There will be on-going assessments to track the students progress throughout the school year.
Needless to say that 5th grade will be a challenging year in order to make sure each student is well prepared for 6th grade. It is very important that your child participates fully and takes full responsibility for his/her learning.
Students will have several assignments during the school day for which he or she is responsible for. Due to uncertain circumstances, if he/she is unable to complete an assignment this will automatically become homework to be completed at home and returned school the following day. Work not returned to school the following day will result in a zero. Please talk to your child about the importance of completing assignments.
Homework
Students may be assigned homework daily. Please check my class website daily. Review the weekly newsletter nightly to make sure all assignments are completed. Parents you all should check over the homework and review any areas of difficulty with your child.
Students will be expected to read at least 20 minutes every night.
If students do not complete daily work they will expected to finish these assignments as well as assigned work for homework.
Graded Papers
Graded papers will be sent home every Wednesday for review in your child's green take home folder. Please return all graded papers and sign the top sheet for the graded papers. Folders and graded papers should be returned no later than Friday. The most up to date grades/averages can be assessed through STI Parent Portal. If you do not already have the login information for your child, you will need to contact the front office so you can get access.
Student of the Month
This year, all 5th grade students who go above and beyond in the classroom will have an opportunity to earn Student of the Month Award/Pin or either a Character Trait Award through Guidance.
Attendance Policy
In order for your child to be successful in 5th grade, attendance is vital. Classroom Instruction begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. Students are considered tardy after 8:00 a.m. Assignments that are missed due to a student being absent or late they will have 3 days to make up those assignments. An absent folder with make up work will be sent home and should be returned with the completed assignments. Parents are encouraged to help students complete the make up work as this is material that has been reviewed in class during the students absence. Alternative assignments may be assigned in place of group projects, labs and/or stations.
Room Parents
These parents will help organized parties, special projects and events, etc. All parents are important to us. No one will be left out. Room parents will be called upon during the year to help with various activities. Occasionally you will receive a note or a call from me for help! I would like to thank each of your in advance for your this school year.
Communication
Each child has a binder with an agenda in it. This binder is basically a communication folder that will come home every night and must be returned every day.
Sending in Money
There may be times when money needs to be sent in. This could be for lunch, field trips, etc. If you do need to send in money please send it in an envelope or plastic bag. I also ask that you write down the child firs and last name, the amount enclosed, and the reason for sending in the money.
If you would like to schedule a conference, please send a note with your child or send an email to me at [email protected].
